About

This page, as well as the associated mailing lists, comprise an attempt to further interconnect those who care about Russian rock in Israel. The mailing list in its initial stage (announced in private e-mails in the beginning of Feb., 1998 (Shvat, 5758 :-) )) had 15 subscribers. As of today it has different subscribers together on both transliterated and KOI-8R versions of the discussions list, ones on the moderated announcements list. Overall, there are different subscribers on these lists.

Thanks to many people, the mailing lists are here and are working. Thank you, the subscribers, for being the great community you are. And, of course, thanks to all those who write and perform the Russian rock music!

ru-rock-in-il

is the main discussion list. It is not moderated, which means that any subscriber can send an email to it, and if the email passes some automatic validity tests, it will immediately be sent out to all the subscribers. It is open to free discussions, primary topic being the Russian rock music in Israel. Sometimes we speak about rock music in general, sometimes about the Russian rock music culture news which do not relate to anything in Israel. Usually, it is no more than 3 messages a workday, peak being 30 messages as of 16/Feb/1998 - such things happen when there is a hot event going on or about to take place. When such a flurry of messages happened for the first time back then, we thought of establishing

ru-rock-in-il-announce

-- the moderated version, that contains the announcements about the upcoming events, or otherwise important cultural news of interest to the Russian rock in Israel audience. A slight problem with this list is that some members of the main discussion list post announcements to the main list only, without sending a copy to the announcement list (e.g., if they tell about a small in-apartment concert etc.). Only if the moderator notices this message on time and voluntary forwards it over, it can get to the moderated one. Another problem is that even if you post to the announcement list, your message still won't appear in it until the moderator approves it.

The mailing list administrator, also a subscriber, can always be reached at owner-ru-rock-in-il@lists.neystadt.org.

If you have some experience with other mailing lists, and are not afraid of exchanging emails with the Majordomo robot, try to

on the mailing list server available commands by e-mail, including advanced usage.

If the form above doesn't work for you (this can happen if your browser is not properly configured to send mail on your behalf, which is a common situation if you are not at your home/office regular PC), don't panic. You can manually send an email to majordomo@lists.neystadt.org, with a single line help in the message body. Overall, your message should look like this:

Subscribing and Unsubscribing

Use this page to subscribe/unsubscribe.

You can subscribe to either Russian (KOI-8R) or transliterated version of the list.

Sending mail to the list

After you've subscribed, you'll be able to send mail to the mailing list. Use the address ru-rock-in-il@lists.neystadt.org for your postings. The list is currently not moderated, so please be polite and choose a good subject line.

Use plain text postings only (HTML or plain+HTML messages will not go through to the list). Attachments are prohibited as well.

Use either KOI-8R encoding or write in a Latin transliteration of Russian.

If you think your posting is worth being sent to the announcements list, try to CC it to ru-rock-in-il-announce@lists.neystadt.org. You do not need to be a subscriber to send a message to the announcements list. Your posting, however, will only be sent to the subscribers after a moderator approves it. The lag will be approximately one workday. If your message is rejected, you will not necessarily be notified about that.

Common problems encountered when sending mail

If you have sent a mail to the list and your message has never got through, don't panic. Check if you accidentially had sent it without a subject, or with an attachment, or not in the "plain text" format. Note that some programs offer you to "include your vcard with each message" - this is also an attachment and will preclude your message to be accepted by the mailing list robot. Last, it can be that you were automatically unsubscribed from the list. This happens if mail to your address bounced a significant amount of times. If you were on the main mailing list, you will be automatically transferred to the announcement list. In this case, you'll still be allowed to post to the main list, but you won't receive the main mailing list mail. If your email address continues to bounce for a long time, you'll be removed from the announcements list as well. In any case, if you suspect (due to recent problems with your email, such as being over quota) that your address has been removed from the list, try to subscribe again (nothing bad will happen if you're still subscribed, you'll continue to get the messages in one copy).

If any of the above was the case, your message was automatically thrown out - correct your mistakes and send it again.

Some people reported that they "receive the mail sent to the list, but they can't post to the list". This turned out to be either a problem of the format in which the email was sent (didn't I tell you need to send it in plain text and not in the HTML format?), or else they tried to send their mail from different addresses (not the ones they originally had subscribed from). Unfortunately, due to tens of spammers trying to post into our list daily this way, I have no choice but to immediately have the mailing list software junk all the emails that come from non-subscribers. So, if you move to a different e-mail address, don't just set up forward to it from the old one. You have to unsubscribe from the old address and resubscribe from the new one. Let me stress it again: every address you send mail from MUST be subscribed to the list, otherwise your mail will be silently rejected.

Archives of the old postings

The mailing list server automatically archives the messages posted to the list. Ask the server for help if you wish to retrieve them via the e-mail interface.

The one who put up the idea that we need to have e-mail communication. Was an active promoter of the mailing list in its earliest stages, when it was the most needed to gain the momentum to get going.

Mark "d0c" Ignatovsky

Rock author and a rock band leader. See his Rock-Club for Russian Bands in Israel pages and a page devoted to Yuri Naumov. Organized a great non-profit concert of Yuri Naumov in Technion, Haifa. It was his announcement of his Yuri Naumov's corner that gave birth to the mailing list. And it was this concert that inspired a lot of other folks on the list to try their skills in bringing here the bands they would like to see perform in Israel.
